Every ten years, the Higher Learning Commission of Colleges and Schools structures its Accreditation process at Bluffton to make sure it is "Living out its Mission Statement."
Last time the Higher Learning Commission team came to Bluffton, we were accredited. A team of five members are coming again March 23-25 to reaffirm the accreditation. There are five criteria that a college has to meet to be accredited and this is through two processes: a peer evaluation and a self study. The Bluffton University Steering Committee consisting of Hans Houshower, George Lehman, Sally Weaver Sommer, Lamar Nisly, and Robin Bowlus. They are in charge of writing a self-study and organizing it around the five criteria.
One of the criteria for fulfilling the mission of the college or university is to show how Bluffton lives out its mission statement. When the team of five members from the Higher Learning Commission comes to Bluffton's campus, they will be meeting and interviewing students, faculty, and trustees to see what Bluffton University is doing to achieve its mission. Gayle Trollinger, Bluffton's Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, and many others are trying to communicate to students the upcoming Accreditation process and the mission statement so that they are able to answer questions about how Bluffton University is achieving the mission in all that is happening on campus. Trollinger says, "This is just a good time to remind everyone of the mission and who we are." Students may have noticed the mission statement posted on various things such as course syllabi, the Bluffton website, and the "Bluffton's Next Top Brain" challenge. Trollinger says referring to the "Next Top Brian" challenge, "We're just trying to have some fun with it."
There is also a student committee that is involved with preparing for the Accreditation process. These students include Andy Lehman, Jenn Kriebel, Zach Riggs, and Brent Householder and they will be working with everyone to try and get ready for the visit and acting as student representatives when the team comes to campus March 23-25.
