It started as just another invention to compete with PlayStation 3 and Xbox360, now the Nintendo Wii has made its way into the classroom.

The Nintendo Wii is known to be one if the greatest inventions for the world of video game entertainment. It was in the fall of 2007 when Amber Doty, a 2004 Bluffton University graduate, brought the idea to Tami Forbes about introducing a class that involved using the Wii as a form of virtual recreation. Some of the purposes for this class were to introduce this gaming system to people who have never played the Wii and to make them feel comfortable playing it. "Our goal with this class is to introduce people to lifelong recreation activities" said Tami Forbes "it is an exciting activity that uses electronic games to get people moving." The class started off the semester with the basics of the Wii; they created their Wii characters, did the fitness test and just started to introduce a wide variety of recreational games. "It is like an outdoor recreation class going outside but this time it's indoors" said Ryan Doty, also a Bluffton Alumni.

Ryan and Amber Doty, the instructors for the class, have many plans for the semester. One of the games that the instructors are really excited about is the Active Life Outdoor Challenge game, which comes with the fit board that engages the whole body in a variety of fast pace outdoor games. The students will also be playing games such as Mario and Sonic Olympics, Winter Sports 2: The Ultimate Challenge, and any other outdoor activity related games.

The class is made up of 24 students with three stations to play. The 24 students are divided in two groups, one goes in at 6:30 pm until 7:30 pm and then the next group shows up. The room is too small to have all 24 students at once and there are not enough consoles for all. The groups of 12 students are divided into smaller groups of 4 members; each 4-member group is assigned to one game console. The systems are set up with projectors that the Technology Center sets up so that the picture would show on the wall and they get a much greater and brighter picture. "The Technology Center has been great! They come and help us set up. We got three stations and we play off the walls" said Professor Tami Forbes.

So far, according to Tami Forbes, the class is planned to be offered in the spring. It was a great and successful idea of coming up with such a thing. It is a 1 credit course that requires a $50 activity fee. The $50 goes to the instructors and also to any equipment that needs to be replaced or fixed. The fee is also a way of not burdening the college with the expenses of the course. "It is a fairly inexpensive way to try out different activities to see what you like best" said Tami Forbes regarding the $50 fee. That way after this class, students would have a much clearer picture before going to invest over $300 to pay for the system and everything that comes with it and in the process students get to do some exercise virtual recreation style.

Wow, I never thought I would see a college class that uses video games as its main subject manner. That's pretty cool!
