In the midst of a campus stroll late Sunday night, two friends and I perched ourselves on the ledge of Frog Baby's fountain. We lay motionless one-by-one around the fountain's bed. Muncie was treating us to a beautifully crisp, comfortable and clear night, providing a calming atmosphere for gazing endlessly into the summer night's sky.

It's time to form another search party. Actually, make that a search committee.

Central Michigan University Trustees have an opportunity Thursday to advance a land area that has sat dormant for far too long.
The last time the trustees met on May 16 they were uninformed about the six-story hotel and office development proposal on south campus's Center for Applied Research and Technology.

As the saying goes, it's a mad world we live in.
Whether you are majoring in politics or leisure studies, you are living in a struggling economy. Just getting a college degree is tough enough, but that's only the tip of the iceberg.
Many of you more than likely will pay a fortune in loans once your college years are behind you.

Soldiers becoming students will receive more money for school.
With the Senate voting 75-22, and the House of Representatives voting 256-166, it shows the new G.I. Bill is a bipartisan effort.
With the passage of the updated G.I. Bill, it means the government's doing the right thing for soldiers and future soldiers.

Come September, when the political party conventions commence, presumptive Republican nominee John McCain will take to the podium in St. Paul with an audience of three-piece suits, oil execs and any other good ol' boy with a VIP pass. About one thousand miles away in Denver, presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama will be making a similar acceptance speech, except his will lack the gas-guzzling SUVs, National Rifle Association officials and padded seats.

Soave off target on smoking ban To the Daily: In spite of Robert Soave's disclaimer at the outset of his column (Smoking them out, 07/14/2008), I suspect that he has indeed inhaling something - and something more potent than tobacco smoke. Without directly saying so, Soave tries to frame the public smoking ban as a civil rights issue, even going so far as to claim that smokers are "persecuted" under such legislation.

Based on the short amount of time he's been with the University, it appears Rich Rodriguez's name is "trouble." The Athletic Department's problem child made headlines again last week when an out-of-court settlement determined that the Wolverines' new head football coach would have to pay $4 million for breaking his contract with his former employer, West Virginia University.

The editorial cartoonist for the "Indianapolis Star" is a gentleman named Gary Varvel. I've enjoyed Mr. Varvel's work for several years - first for its conservative nature, and second for his gift of pointing out political stories that the mainstream media tends to overlook.

Late last month, the city of Lexington announced that it would do something innovative with existing infrastructure. No, of course I don't mean preserving historically or economically significant buildings and local businesses; Lexington would never think to do that.

Just out of curiosity, as an avid UK fan, mother of a former student and employee of UK, what's up with the fact that in a time of budget cuts due to funding and raising student costs the only one person ranks a bonus when all those hard working employees making him look so good don't even get their modest 2 percent raise?
Does President Lee Todd not open the windows of his ivory tower long enough to hear how disgruntled most of his employees and students really are?
The budget cuts in the departments that may not put UK in the top-20 bracket, but they have brought the university quite a bit of versatility and notoriety.

In recent months, the rising cost at the pumps has been a major headliner in numerous news and media outlets across the United States. The price of gasoline is a hot topic on the political agenda, especially with the upcoming presidential election. Thousands across the nation worry how they will fuel their vehicles, and many have had to make lifestyle changes to accommodate the rising costs.

Until we can proudly show university donors the decor in Debartolo Hall, purchasing new land is not an absolutely defensible move.

If you've been keeping up with my writing the last few weeks, you probably have a good idea about my beliefs regarding our university's lack of regard for students. As of yet, I still lack contrary evidence to show that my rebukes of UK are ill-informed or misplaced.

Tons of studies have been conducted that show previous generations were much happier than we are now, especially those of us in my college-aged generation. They had more friends and more fun than we do. But how? We have big-screen TVs, DVDs, cell phones, video games and the Internet.

Over the past few weeks I have heard four guys talk about needing a pedicure, and the other guys around them agree. I appreciate a well-groomed guy, but when men are more worried about their appearance than girls, I feel the universe has lost its balance.

I served under President Sidney Ribeau until 2002. I only talked with him once and said hello a few times, yet my sense of him is that he is trustworthy, kind, wise and a fine leader from whom we can still learn by noticing his qualities.
President Ribeau said many great things, but his silent behavior spoke loudly about the value of trusting and kindness.
